stolen from beckerbuns....
Oct. 19th, 2005 06:50 amWhere were you when ______________ happened:
The Death of Diana - I was actually at my parents' 25th anniversary party. We didn't find out till around 11 when we got home and turned on the news.
John Lennon's Death - *ahem* I was four months old.
The First Gulf War - In fifth grade. Honestly, I don't recall much about it except that I was kind of sad that it had gotten to the point of war and that I was writing to a Marine sergeant. That had started out as a school project and I was one of the lucky few who got a letter back. We wrote to each other for two years.
9/11 - I was sitting in the back of a computer lab, waiting for my partner, Xuanthy, to show up. There was a class in there already (thankfully, they were just working on programming assignments), so when my phone rang, I ran out the door. It was Xuanthy, saying she wouldn't be able to make it. I walked back in and apologized to the professor for the disturbance. He had been listening to the reports on BBC radio of the planes crashing into the towers. I was horrified, and all the news sites were down...I couldn't get to anything. I went downstairs to Lance's office to see if he was having better luck, and found out he hadn't even known about it. The rest of our classes were cancelled and I felt like a chump because until late that night, I'd completely forgotten that Xuanthy is from Maryland and probably had friends that had been hurt.
The Challenger Disaster - This...is one of those things that everyone tells me I remember, but I don't. I was in Kindergarten, and my mother tells me she was in the library working on a filmstrip or something when she heard the news and she looked out the door and saw my class heading back to our classroom, probably from music or PE or art. I have a vague memory of reading about it the following year....
