We bought this house in December, and since we've been occupied with getting certain inside things up to code, we never got much of a chance to work on the yard until today.
We mowed and cleaned and raked and planted and WHOO it was crazy. Mom gave me two tomato plants yesterday--she said she'd heard someone got like 300 tomatoes off of one plant so I expect I'll be canning this year. YAY! Gonna make some pasta sauce, yep.
Also planted some strawberries. Can't have them this year, but eh well. I'll get them next year.
My lilac bush is blooming! That made me happy too. Must find something fun to do with lilacs. Hopefully my roses will come up as well.
There are three trees in our front yard--one of them is a sweet gum tree, the other two are maples. This yard hadn't been raked in what looked like a few years, so we knew we were in for a big job. One of the maple trees has been dropping leaves literally larger than my head, and after all the cleaning and bagging and stuff, we wound up filling eight 45-gallon bags with leaves and twigs and sweet gum balls. EESH.
We were cleaning off the retaining wall (well, what's left of it...erosion has slightly had its way with it) and someone from a couple doors down wandered up. I know he was talking, I heard him mumble something about drug dealers then he offered to clean the rest of our yard for eight dollars, because he neeeeeded the money. (Um...no thank you buh bye now.) He wandered off up the street to shout at some bikers and we haven't seen him since.
After a few hours another neighbor came by to introduce himself. He seemed a lot tamer. In fact, he works for the city. He's a janitor over at the community center. He had a really really big dog with him. But she was sweet and not quite the screwball my parents' dog is, so that was cool.
So now my feet hurt, I've got a wee bit of a sunburn, and there's more grass in my nose now than there is in our yard, but hey. That's life.
